Saturn's Rings: A Cosmic Splendor

The Jewel of the Solar System

Saturn is easily the most recognizable planet due to its magnificent ring system. Viewed from the Cassini spacecraft, even a sliver of the gas giant is breathtaking.

What Are the Rings Made Of?

Contrary to popular belief, the rings are not solid. They are composed of billions of chunks of ice and rock.

  • Composition: 99.9% water ice.
  • Size: Ranging from dust grains to house-sized boulders.
  • Thickness: Amazingly thin—only about 10 meters thick in most places!
