Photoshop CS6 Basics: Preparing Images for the Web

Still Rocking CS6?

While Creative Cloud is the standard today, many users still rely on the perpetual license version of Photoshop CS6. Here is a quick guide to optimizing images for the web.

The "Save for Web" Legacy

In CS6, the magic command is File > Save for Web (Legacy).

  • JPEG: Use for photos. Set quality to 60-80% for the best balance of size and quality.
  • PNG-24: Use for logos or images with transparency.
  • GIF: Use only for simple animations (avoid for photos).

Resizing for Screens

Always resize your image before saving. Go to Image > Image Size and ensure the resolution is 72 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), which is standard for screens.
